Unreasonable Holds - Virtual Wallet

I'm a young and sometimes financially ignorant college student. My first ever debit card was with PNC -- my parents saw details on the student account in the mail and signed me up for it. It bragged of no overdraft fees (of course, the interest earned was beans, but they figured I wouldn't have much money in college, anyway). I get my first job at my college and sign up for direct deposit. The nightmare starts here. PNC calls me up (during class), I say I'll call them back, and they threaten to TERMINATE MY ACCOUNT and I'm like "Buddy, I'm paying $150 for this lecture, can't I call you back in an hour?" and the guy was totally rude and unforgiving, repeating this same threat. Apparently I need to prove I'm a student first before I can receive direct deposit. Didn't I prove that when I signed up for a student card? No? This was sorted out after about 2 months of me not receiving a paycheck and getting constant warnings from my bank because I bought a pack of gum (literally) as a reward for getting my first paycheck from my first job that apparently never cleared.

So I was more careful. I glared at bank statements to make sure everything was in there. And then I made my first large-ish purchase on the card. Might seem like nothing to anyone else out there, but I had to buy these - books for classes. I knew so long as my last paycheck had cleared like it usually did, and that my savings tab in my virtual wallet did allocate the money it was supposed to, I would have about $30 more than I needed to get the books.

Nope. Here's me, getting embarassed and having my card rejected in front of a line of city kid yuppies, the little old lady saying it was rejected. PNC held my last paycheck THREE WHOLE DAYS longer than they normally do so I was boned and couldn't buy anything. I called up, reasonably mad (I had no books for the first week of classes and I was embarrassed to boot), and the lady on the other end of the phone says that she's terminating my account because I'm being hostile and that they couldn't do anything about this "unexpected delay in service". Delay in service? This is my money, not a goddamn haircut, are you kidding me?

I'm glad it's done, really. I wouldn't trust these people with $5, let alone $500.
